We all have parts. One part of you might want to move on while another holds on tight. One part stays calm at work, and another snaps at the people you love. Internal Family Systems (IFS), developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, is an approach to therapy that helps you get to know these parts with curiosity rather than judgment.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

In IFS, the parts that seem to cause trouble, like the inner critic, the worrier or the one that shuts down, are usually trying to protect you. When they feel understood, they can relax, and you can respond from a calmer, clearer place that IFS calls Self.
How IFS can help
- Stress, anxiety and feeling reactive
- Trauma and painful memories
- Repeating patterns in relationships
- Grief, separation and life transitions
- Harsh self-criticism and burnout
IFS during separation and divorce
Separation can bring up parts that feel furious, frightened or grief-stricken, sometimes all in the same day. IFS gives you a way to acknowledge those reactions without letting them make your decisions for you. That can make a real difference when you’re preparing for mediation or co-parenting conversations. See Separation & Divorce for support packages.
What sessions look like
We talk, and at times I’ll invite you to notice what’s happening inside as a feeling, thought or body sensation. We go at your pace, and you stay in charge of what we explore. You don’t need to relive difficult experiences in detail. IFS works well online and in person, and it combines naturally with EMDR therapy.
I’ve completed IFS Level 1 training and bring close to 30 years of experience as a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Couple and Family Therapist. Sessions are available online across Ontario or in person in Dundas.
